Why the Rams Pass on Blackmon
By Tyler Lurkins
Rams fans will need to understand we are not in a “win now” situation. The Rams hired a terrific football mind but Fisher is a coach that develops teams. How many times have we heard or read that Fisher is an eight win coach? He places his teams in winning position and places an exciting product on the field. Fisher is known to build from the inside, out. The offensive and defensive lines take first priority.
This Ram’s squad contains several key holes. Key holes especially are evident on both sides of the line. The Rams will draft for talent and improvement. Blackmon is a talent that can improve this team, but is he worth the sixth overall selection? I, for one, say no. Blackmon is not A.J. Green, Randy Moss, or Calvin Johnson. With the depth of receiver in this draft, plus two first round selections the next two years, the organization will hold off on Blackmon.
This franchise squandered several mid round picks on receivers. The roster contains a recovering Amendola, a developing Gibson, Pettis, and Salas, and the unknown Alexander. The Rams signed Steve Smith, who may be a productive wideout when healthy. Maybe with a knowledgeable and productive coaching staff, the next big receiver is on the roster. This organization will coach to skill on the roster, look at the depth charts in Tennessee and New York. The rosters contained a high round QB, but none possessed the stellar wide receiver corp. This team will coach with who they have, not what they do not have.
Currently in my mock, Alshon Jeffery is the selection in the second round. Scouts question his separation and true speed, but watch his highlight tape. Jeffery is a solid, sound receiver. No corner can match his leaping ability. Jeffery rarely drops balls and produced despite poor QB play. Jeffery is the option that will grow with Bradford. He will become an excellent and trustworthy option, especially in the red zone.
