2012 COLTS 7 ROUND MOCK DRAFT
By Rob Voigt
I recently participated in a full 7 round interactive mock. The results you can see at http://frogsfootballfantasy.com/mockdraft/interactivemockdraft.html . You can also vote for how the GMs performed. You could not trade during the draft, or any future years picks. Most teams were looking to trade down to acquire more picks. As Colts GM, I gambled a bit with second round pick. I figured correctly that neither Coby Fleener, nor Don’ta Hightower would be there at 34. I was able to trade back to 46 with the Eagles GM. I threw in one of the Colts 7th rounders, overall pick 214, in exchange for the Eagles 2nd, 4th, 5th and 6th round picks. Now armed with 12 picks I felt confident I could stock roster well.
I went into the draft with the plan of addressing what I felt were the Colts most pressing roster needs: Andrew Luck, TE, CB, ILB and WR. Both Austin Collie and Blair White are UFA’s after this season.
ROUND 1, PICK 1
Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford 6’4” 236 lbs
Heard anything about this guy?
ROUND 2, PICK 46 (mock trade with Pha)
Mohamed Sanu, WR, Rutgers 6’2” 211 lbs
The gamble of my trade came into play when my targeted TE, Dwayne Allen, was picked at 41. I debated WR Marvin Jones from Cal here. Picked Sanu based on his dedication to work hard at his craft.
ROUND 3, PICK 64
Trumaine Johnson, CB, Montana 6’2” 204 lbs
Colts need cornerbacks that can play well. The bigger, the better. Unheralded, but coveted DB.
ROUND 4, PICK 97
Coryell Judie, CB, Texas A+M 6’0” 194 lbs
Judie has skills and speed to stay with NFL wideouts.
ROUND 4, PICK 114 (mock trade with Pha)
Ladarius Green, TE, Louisiana-Lafayette 6’6” 238 lbs
A not-quite-as-rich-man’s Fleener. Tall, fast receiving tight end to work seams and flat for Luck.
ROUND 5, PICK 136
Jerry Franklin, ILB, Arkansas 6’1” 245 lbs
An instinctive tackler who should fit into Chuck Pagano’s scheme.
ROUND 5, PICK 153 (mock trade with Pha)
Devon Wylie, WR, Fresno State 5’9” 187 lbs
Fast, sure-handed prototypical slot receiver. Can also return kicks.
ROUND 5, PICK 170 (compensatory pick)
Nicolas Jean-Baptiste, NT, Baylor 6’2” 335 lbs
When watching games for RG3, couldn’t help but notice this guy dominate in the middle.
ROUND 6, PICK 194 (mock trade with Pha)
Cyrus Gray, RB, Texas A+M 5’10” 206 lbs
Solid running back with good size and speed. Can rotate with, and eventually replace Donald Brown.
ROUND 6, PICK 206 (comp pick)
Darius Fleming, OLB, Notre Dame 6’2” 245 lbs
Versatile, athletic, developmental LB played in 3-4 scheme in South Bend.
ROUND 7, PICK 208
Lamar Holmes, OT, Southern Miss 6’5” 323 lbs
Large drive blocking type drafted for depth and potential replacement for tackle or guard.
ROUND 7, PICK 253 Mr. Irrelevant
Kevin Koger, TE, Michigan 6’4” 258 lbs
More of a blocking tight end, but has good hands. Will battle for roster spot with Eldridge and Miller.
In summary: 12 total picks, 1 Andrew Luck, 2 TEs, 2 CBs, 2 WRs, 1 NT, 1 ILB, 1 OLB, 1 RB, 1 OT
