2013 Draft Trade Opportunities by Tyler Lurkins

As the draft approaches, prospects begin to solidify their draft grades. Players fall into a range of picks, teams balance their own issues of player selection based upon an average of player talent and team need. The current collective bargaining agreement favors a very strict rookie pay scale. Obviously, understanding a bust pick no longer financially cripples a franchise, the era of trading picks takes prominence on draft day.
// ]]>
Below are teams with most to gain by negotiating a trade on draft day.

Buffalo Bills-Buffalo laid their cards on the table, face up. With Tavares Jackson being the only QB on the roster, Kansas City and Jacksonville will begin the sales process of convincing Buffalo to trade up for a QB. As Geno Smith continues to rise in popularity, clearly becoming the draft darling, Buffalo has the most to gain by drafting him. Clearly Buffalo will be forced to give up more selections now than they would prior to the release of Fitzpatrick. At this point they haven’t much of a choice considering the options will be Jackson or a 2nd tier prospect. Look for them to give a little less than the blockbuster RGII trade, a proper value will probably be their 2013, first and second round picks, and an additional second or third round pick in 2014.

San Diego Chargers-Though coming off of a couple of down years, the D consistently ranked better than average in the NFL. After hiring an offensive minded coach, the team’s draft priority lies in selecting weapons for the aging, but talent Phillip Rivers. Currently no left tackle is on the roster and the free agent market dwindles. A possible scenario, should their division rival allow it, is shopping their second round pick, and possibly more, to Kansas City for Brandon Albert.

Miami Dolphins-Whipping out the check book early in free agency, the Dolphins still failed to fill the biggest holes. Martin is the heir apparent at left tackle, so right tackle will come as a mid round pick. What about an end pass rusher, and more importantly, a corner? With six picks in the first four rounds, Miami has two options. Find the best talent available and develop, or find a package of picks and select a star. Oakland, Philadelphia, Cleveland, and Arizona are good landing spots to select a premier end, left tackle, or corner. With minimum talent on the roster, the cash strapped Raiders will invite a low cost trade to hoard draft picks to fill their roster. A swap of first rounder’s, and either a third or fourth round selection will give the Dolphins the third pick in the draft.

New Orleans Saints-The fifteenth pick is a hard spot for the Saints. With no draft picks to trade up for a premium left tackle or secondary help, they will surely trade down. Teams like Dallas or San Francisco are trade friendly teams in need of a defensive help. Both teams will covet free safety, Kenny Vaccaro.

St. Louis Rams-This team seems to act like the New England Patriots of old. They will continue to deal picks and select an arsenal of young talent. Possessing two first rounder’s, it’s highly unlikely they will stay in their current position. Asking little in return, they will move up and down as needed to grab the players on their big board.

San Francisco 49er’s-With little to no needs and a bevy of picks, this team will trade up for talent. Dahl is not the answer at free safety. A top corner like Milliner, Rhodes, or Trufant are also very attractive prospects. The Niners simply will not have the room to use all their picks and keep them on the roster. They have the luxury of a pick package that will bring them the player they want, anywhere in the first round.

Naturally any team looks to pull the trigger on a beneficial trade. The Jets need talent and will trade down for a small package of picks. The Giants are in win now mode and may move up in the draft. Green Bay shows limited needs on their roster. Carolina needs talent to move from a rebuilding roster to a developing one. Anything is possible on draft day, but the six teams listed have the most to gain, and lose, from a blockbuster on draft day.

2013 7 Round Texans Mock Draft by Raymond Marceau

This year the Texans have 7 picks this year. The last couple years the Texans have focused on the defensive side of the ball. With JJ Watt, Whitney Mercilus, Kareem Jackson and Brooks Reed the Texans have developed a solid young defense. The Texans have some holes that need to filled on both sides of the ball. I have some solutions that could fix some holes before the draft. Nose Tackle and Inside Linebacker are their two big holes on Defense. Shaun Cody had a very unproductive year. He is also 30 years old and coming off injury. I think the Texans should put Jared Crick at NT. He was a sought out talent out of Nebraska who had his senior season shortened by a torn pectoral muscle. If they bulk him up to 300 pounds, which isn’t out of the picture because he weighs 287 pounds. They could let go of Shaun Cody who is a free agent. The next hole would be inside linebacker. The best run stopping LB last year was Brooks Reed. When he was injured they were shredded in the run. IMO I would let Connor Barwin go to free agency that is going to look for big money. Then put Mercilus at one of the starting OLB.

DE: JJ Watt and Antonio Smith

NT: Jared Crick

OLB: Brooks Reed and Whitney Mercilus

ILB: Brian Cushing and Jon Bostic

CB: Jonathan Joseph and Kareem Jackson

SS/FS: Glover Quin and Daniel Manning

QB: Matt Schaub and Tyler Bray

RB: Arian Foster and Marcus Lattimore

FB: James Casey

WR: Andre Johnson, Tavon Austin and Kenny Stills

OT: Duane Brown and Jordan Mills

OG: Wade Smith and Ben Jones

C: Chris Myers.

1st Round pick 27th: Tavon Austin, WR, West Virginia: If Austin is still available he can be a Percy Harvin type of receiver who can play the #2 receiver if asked of him. He could also be good in the slot if they decide to put Lestar Jean at #2 since Posey will not be back in 2013 due to torn Achillies.

2nd Round pick 57th: Tyler Bray, QB, Tennessee: One of my favorite prospects in this years draft who had a great combine is Tyler Bray. I feel like he has the ability to backup Schaub for a year or 2 and then take over the team and could be a franchise QB. He had a mediocre junior year but the talent in the SEC is due to it and a mediocre O-line and defense.

3rd Round Pick 89th: Jon Bostic, ILB, Florida: This year has decent depth for ILB. Bostic is a great prospect that will be picked in the mid rounds. He ran a 4.6 40-yard dash and put 22 reps on the bench press. He weighs around 245 and moves great with 4.6 40. He is a downhill Mike linebacker who would fit next to Cushing.

4th Round Pick 126th: Kenny Stills, WR, Oklahoma: If Austin is being used in the slot, Kenny Stills would be a great fit as the #2 receiver across Andre Johnson. Johnson, Stills and Austin would be a great combination.

5th Round Pick 158th: Marcus Lattimore, RB, South Carolina: Houston has a great backfield with Foster, Tate and Forsett. There is a chance that Tate could get traded before the draft, at the draft or after the draft. Lattimore is a boom or bust pick and why not take a guy who would be a 1st round pick without his injury. The worse case he continues with his knee injuries and doesn’t have a successful career. The best case is he is the great back he was expected to be.

6th Round Pick 190th: Jordan Mills, OT, Louisiana Tech: Mills would be in contention to fight for the RT job. I believe Ben Jones will anchor down the RG position but Newton and Harris had a rough season. Mills has potential to be a decent RT.

7th Round Pick 222nd: Brad Wing, P, LSU: The last pick should be a kicker or a punter. Shayne Graham and Donnie Jones are up their in age and haven’t showed their aging with poor or below average talent. Wing is considered the best punter with long hang times and actually pretty fast for a punte.

However, the S position was an absolute disaster. People either love S Charles Godfrey or think he is a liability. Either way, he is the only player on the roster at S that should even be starting in the NFL.

Vaccaro is the top safety in the class because he excels in coverage. He will be able to provide the defensive matchup that Panthers have lacked against elite TE’s in the NFL.

Round 2 – Pick #44

Jesse Williams, DT – Alabama

Why He Fits in Carolina: This is a pretty easy analysis. The “Monstar” clogs holes and devours running backs. He is an absurdly good physical athlete and could theoretically skyrocket into discussion to be the #3 DT off the board.

The Panthers interior DL graded out, by multiple analytical tools and just the simple eye test, as one of the worst in the NFL. The knock on Williams, and why he may be available at pick #44, is he may be a 2 down lineman. But, he is the size the Panthers need on their interior and I believe he can develop into an every down DT. He starts day 1 and solidifies the Carolina DL by anchoring the middle.

Round 4 – Pick #105

David Quessenberry, OT – San Jose State

Why He Fits: When I watched the Senior Bowl practice I became very intrigued with Quessenberry. He has a very nice developmental frame for a prototypical LT in the NFL. He held up very nicely in pass protection from what I saw during Senior Bowl week and he demonstrated potential at both OT and OG as well.

The Panthers OL has one stud piece in all-pro center Ryan Kalil. It has another quality young piece in second year LG Amini Silatolu. The rest of the line lacks talent and depth. LT Jordan Gross is past his prime and his replacement needs to be phased in, Quessenberry may be that guy.

Round 5 – Pick #141

Marquess Wilson, WR – Washington State

Why He Fits: He is a classic deep ball WR. He makes clean strides with his 6-2 frame and can go up and grab Newton’s vertical passes. There are some character questions but at this point in the draft the potential is worth the risk in my estimation. I had him as a top 5 WR coming into this season and was very disappointed in what transpired for this young man. Here is to hoping the Panthers can get the most out of him.

Round 6 – Pick #172

Mychal Rivera, TE – Tennessee

Why He Fits: The Panthers have just one TE under contract, Greg Olsen. Rivera is a physical blocker in the run game and is an underrated vertical threat. His good hands and physicality make him a nice versatile TE prospect and he will be a very good special teams player as well. A solid value pick in a position area of need in round 6.

Carolina Panthers 7 Round Mock Draft by CJ Milner

By the time the 14th pick rolls around and Carolina is on the clock, some of the players who should be their top targets will likely be gone. That list, in no particular order, includes: WR Cordarrelle Patterson, OT Lane Johnson, OG Chance Warmack, DT’s Sharrif Floyd, Sheldon Richardson, & Star Lotulelei, CB Dee Milliner, and S Kenny Vaccaro. Should these players already be drafted, Carolina should make some calls to teams in the 18-25 range to try to strike a deal to trade down and acquire a 3rd round pick. If Carolina does trade down, some of the top players available in the 18-25 range could include names like WR DeAndre Hopkins, OG Jonathan Cooper, DT Jesse Williams, CB’s Xavier Rhodes, & Johnthan Banks, and S Jonathan Cyprien. So, with that said, here is my Carolina Panthers 2013 NFL Mock Draft.

1st Round: Johnthan Banks, CB, Mississippi State

Johnthan Banks is a long, rangy corner who has potential to develop into a shutdown player. At 6’1, 185 lbs, Banks has prototypical size and speed that NFL teams are looking for now a days with the WR’s getting bigger and faster. Currently, Banks is my 3rd rated CB barely behind Dee Milliner and Xavier Rhodes and depending on the combine performance of each, he could potentially pass one or both players. Banks would obviously be a day one starter for the Panthers starting across from Chris Gamble, who is aging, while 2nd year CB Josh Norman continues to adapt to the speed of the NFL.

2nd Round: Stedman Bailey, WR, West Virginia

3rd Round: Brian Winters, G/T, Kent State

4th Round: Kwame Geathers, DT, Georgia

5th Round: Brennan Williams, OT, North Carolina

6th Round: D.J. Hayden, CB, Houston

7th Round: Ray Ray Armstrong, S, Miami.

Texans 7 Round Mock Draft

IMO I would let Connor Barwin go to free agency who is going to look for big money. Then they move Brooks Reed into the other ILB next to Brian Cushing. Then put Mercilus at one of the starting OLB. I would then seek a free agent or use the 27th pick to pick an OLB/DE. The starting defense would look like this:

LE NT RE

Watt Crick Smith

OLB MLB MLB OLB

Mercilus Reed Cushing FA/1st rd pick

CB CB

Joseph Jackson

FS SS

Quin Manning

1st Round pick 27th: Dion Jordan, OLB/DE, Oregon: With the way I repositioned the defense the Texans are looking for a new OLB/DE. Jordan is a freakish athlete at 6 ft. 7 245 pounds he has great size and speed to be an edge rusher in the NFL. Looking at game film he has great speed and reaction to plays. He has a great use of his hands in the run game and great moves in the pass rush.

2nd Round pick 57th: Arthur Brown, LB, Kansas State: Arthur Brown reminds me of Tampa Bay Buccaneers LB Lavonte David. With a smaller frame around 230 he has the read and react skills of a regular MLB but is smaller. He has good speed and can cover really good for a LB. He can add depth to the Linebacking core

3rd Round Pick 89th: Da’Rick Rogers, WR, Tennessee Tech: Houston needs some receivers that can play across from Andre Johnson. Kevin Walter needs to go because he isn’t a threat to opposing defenses. Da’Rick Rogers has had some personal issues that got him suspended from Tennessee, which led to his transfer to Tennessee Tech. With great size at 6 ft. 4 215 pounds and talent, veterans like Johnson and Foster can keep him out of trouble and be a great player on the field.

4th Round Pick 126th: Kyle Long, OT, Oregon: Kyle Long is a prospect that has a grade of a 2-4 round pick. His results at the combine will solidify his grade. I’ve seen him around the 3rd-4th round. He would be a great addition to Houston’s offensive line. Running a zone-blocking scheme at Oregon will be a quick transition into the NFL with Houston’s zone blocking scheme.

6th Round Pick 190th: Ace Sanders, WR, South Carolina: One of my favorite sleepers in this years upcoming draft. Sanders has moves like Devin Hester and reminds me of Jacoby Jones but more developed wide out and faster. He would be a great addition to their offense at the slot receiver.

7th Round Pick 222nd: Brad Wing, P, LSU: The last pick should be a kicker or a punter. Shayne Graham and Donnie Jones are up their in age and haven’t showed their aging with poor or below average talent. Wing is considered the best punter with long hang times and actually pretty fast for a punter..

By Santos Gonzalez

The Dallas Cowboys have a lot to address this offseason, the biggest problem was probably interior line and sadly I don’t have them addressing it. Here is a revised edition of my Team Mock Draft due to the fact that newly hired DC Monte Kiffin will be influencing just how much help we need to make the transition go successfully.

Round One: Pick 18- FS-Kenny Vaccaro 6’1’’ 218 University of Texas

Round Two: Pick 49- WR-Terrence Williams 6’2’’ 201 Baylor University

Round Three: Pick 81- RB-Joseph Randle 6’0’’ 200 Oklahoma State University

Round Four: Pick 112- RT-Brennan Williams 6’7’’ 315 North Carolina University

Round Five: Pick 144- C-Brian Schwenke 6’3’’ 307 University of California

Round Six: Pick 175- FB-Kyle Juszcyk 6’1’’ 248 Harvard University

Round Seven: Pick 207- LB-Michael Mauti 6’2’’ 235 Penn State University
